While this includes how you’re going to design a highly available, performant and scalable application based on best practices, that’s not the last of it.

Management — How are we going to actually manage the resources and workloads once they’re in the cloud. Will our operations team also manage the cloud resources? Do our developers manage their own resources? Do we retrain current resources or build out a new cloud team with SMEs that manage this? Or do we work with a Managed Service Partner to deal with the day to day for us? Once we have determined who will manage this environment, we need to then determine how.

Kovarus has the view that if you’re in the management console or CLI, you’re doing it wrong. In the cloud, automation isn’t a nice-to-have, it really becomes a prerequisite as the financial stakes are much higher and the value is lost if we still have manual tasks. Providing end users with fully automated stack provisioning and enforcing configuration and compliance management with tools like Puppet and Ansible is critical. Also, embracing DevOps methodologies, even if it’s simply for critical applications re-provisioning, becomes very important as well.
